The CARE-1 project is a 5-year (2019–2024) initiative funded by PEPFAR through USAID, aimed at reducing HIV incidence, morbidity, and mortality among key populations (KPs) in Nigeria. The project operates in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Jigawa, Niger, Bayelsa and Lagos States.
Through human rights-based, peer-led approaches, CARE-1 enhances HIV prevention, diagnosis, and treatment by addressing the biological, social, and structural drivers of the epidemic. The project specifically serves men who have sex with men (MSM), Female sex workers (FSW), Persons who inject drugs (PWID), Transgender (TG) persons, Individuals in correctional, custodial, and other closed settings
By promoting sustainable, stigma-free healthcare access, CARE-1 strengthens community-led interventions, ensuring better health outcomes for vulnerable populations across Nigeria.
