Who are We?

HALG

Heartland Alliance LTD/GTE (HALG)

Our Brand Story

More than 130 years ago, social reformer Jane Addams founded Hull House to uplift Chicago’s most vulnerable, sparking a powerful legacy of compassion and justice. In 1888, she established Heartland Alliance to help immigrants transition to life in the U.S., laying the foundation for an organization committed to dignity and opportunity for all.

Today, Heartland Alliance carries that mission forward, standing as a global leader in the fight against poverty and injustice. Through advocacy, service, and collaboration, the organization works to secure the rights of vulnerable people and communities worldwide.

Building on this legacy, Heartland Alliance LTD/GTE (HALG) was established in Nigeria in 2018, working at the intersection of health and human rights to advance health equity for all.

With a commitment to social and economic justice, we create opportunities, drive impact, and partner with key stakeholders across public and private sectors to build lasting change. As a global player, we remain dedicated to a future where everyone, regardless of their circumstances can access healthcare, opportunity, and a life of dignity.

Our Area of Expertise

Mental Health & Psych Support (MHPSS)

HALG

At HALG, we recognize that mental health is essential to overall well-being. Our trauma-informed MHPSS approach provides compassionate care tailored to individuals who have experienced violence, displacement, or discrimination. Through counseling, peer support, and resilience-building activities, we empower individuals to heal and reclaim their lives.

Harm Reduction

We implement evidence-based harm reduction strategies to support people who use drugs and other vulnerable populations. Our interventions, including needle exchange programs, overdose prevention education, and linkages to treatment, reduce health risks while upholding the dignity and rights of those we serve.

Sexual Violence Care and Support

Survivors of sexual violence deserve access to comprehensive, survivor-centered care. HALG provides medical, legal, and psychosocial support services to survivors, ensuring they receive immediate and long-term care. Our Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) play a crucial role in supporting survivors of sexual violence and providing them with the necessary services, including medical care, legal support, and counselling. Our work also includes community education and advocacy to prevent sexual violence and promote justice.

HIV/AIDS Prevention, Treatment & Care

For over a decade, HALG has been at the forefront of Nigeria’s HIV response. Through our prevention, testing, treatment, and care programs, we reach key and priority populations, ensuring they have access to life-saving services. Our work prioritizes Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT), treatment adherence, and reducing HIV-related stigma and discrimination.

Immunization

HALG supports the national primary healthcare development agency (NPHCDA) in Nigeria to implement projects aimed at identifying, enumerating and vaccinating (IEV) for children, pregnant women and women of reproductive age against vaccine preventable diseases. This will reduce the number of zero dose among the target population. Our approach integrates precision micro-planning, community mobilization, digital data capture, and continuous quality assurance. We work in close proximity with NPHCDA and other relevant ministries, department and agencies (MDAs) in order to ensure synergy, efficiency and effectiveness of implementation.

Treatment for Substance Use

Heartland Alliance partner with the Kaduna state government through the Kaduna State Bureau for Substance Abuse Prevention & Treatment (KADBUSA). This project recognizes the urgent need for comprehensive harm reduction services for populations at high risk. The partnership is aimed at establishment of 115 Drop-In Centers (DICs) across the 23 Local Government Areas to serve as a transformative model in addressing substance use disorders through community-based, evidence-driven interventions. The technical expertise, capacity-building efforts, and harm reduction resources that HALG brings to this partnership is instrumental in achieving sustainable impact at scale.
